In medieval times, books were extremely valuable items that often required months if not years of labor to create. As only a small portion of the population could read, they were also viewed with some amount of suspicion. It's easy to see how books became associated with the dark arts. After all, what business do honest folk have poking through the thoughts and deeds of men long dead?
